Join us for new music with an experiment in artificial reality with cell phones and 3-D glasses. Mason's six-movement work is inspired by stories by Franz Kafka and his magical realism and Crouch's one-act opera, Stained Glass, tells the story of Mamah Borthwick¬–the romantic partner of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Featuring the Last Hundred Ensemble and Juan Trigos, conductor, percussionist Yi-Mei Ciou, and Frost student performers. The concert is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Coral Gables and a research grant from the Frost School of Music. The production of Stained Glass is being supported by the University of Miami XR Faculty Award and the Mac Morris Fund for Innovation in Opera with video design by Jeffrey Buchman and the creative team from Video and Motion

A true icon of soul music, Grammy Lifetime Achievement winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Mavis Staples has captivated audiences for over six decades with her powerful and soul-stirring voice. As a member of the renowned Staple Singers, she played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of gospel, soul and R&B. Hailed by NPR as “one of America’s defining voices of freedom and peace,” she is the kind of once-in-a-generation artist whose impact on music and culture would be difficult to overstate. At this concert, expect to hear Staple Singers classics such as “Respect Yourself,” “Heavy Makes You Happy” and “I’ll Take You There,” covers such as Talking Heads’ “Slippery People” and Funkadelic’s “Can You Get to That” and songs from Staples’ recent collaborations with Ben Harper and Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy.

The Koubek Center is proud to host a Pink+Magic=Jam! on March 7 featuring bassist drummer Julian Babou (from the island of Reunion), Sonny Troupe (Guadaloupe), and trumpeter Etienne Charles, a Miami resident born in Trinidad. The event is open to the public and invites Miami musicians to come and join the jam! As Creole artists dedicated to upholding and developing the music of their native lands, Babou and Troupe have set out to explore a musical history rooted in colonization and slavery and how immigrant communities develop their cultures outside the homeland. Pink+Magic=Jam! is part of a Villa Albertine residency that will take Babou and Troupe to Puerto Rico and New Orleans. Villa Albertine is a French institution for arts and ideas in the United States that will host Pink+Magic=Jam! at Jass Kitchen on March 6 and at WDNA on March 8.
